FigShare has released a poster in an attempt to increase awareness. Please do your bit to help make this a useful tool for all researchers, and improve access for all. The following is taken from the blog section at FigShare.

We’re very lucky at FigShare to have witnessed the birth and growth of the fantastic research management tool Mendeley. As such we can copy some of their early movements in order to increase awareness and we hope that the online community, along with researchers around the world will help FigShare become a usefull tool for all researchers.

And so we have produced the first (oh yes, there will be more) FigShare poster, which we ask you to put up in your departments, community notice boards and blogs.

The poster is available in 3 formats (pdf, docx, pptx). Just click on the appropriate image above to download the file. Depending on your printer, different file formats may print better for you.

The poster is released under CC0 license so please feel free to improve or alter it as you see fit. We would also welcome any new posters which we will put on site if you would like to design one and help spread the message in a more pro-active manner.

As you know, we have launched a blogging contest here at Science 3.0, and we do our best to find challenging and exciting topics that tickle your neurons. Thus, many topics have already seen high-quality science bloggers around: be it ‘Open Access’, be it ‘Evolution’ or ‘Sex’.

For April, a special contest: this month, The EMBO Meeting organizers join our S3.0 venture!

If you don’t know about it yet, The EMBO Meeting is one of the biggest events on the scientific conference calendar. Despite its young age (the 2011 edition will be the third one), the conference gathers more and more science enthusiasts from a huge range of disciplines. It is always 3.5 delightful days that you spend surrounded by fellow scientists including Nobel Prize winners. Oh, and fellow science bloggers – this year the organizers are encouraging conference participants to blog. They are currently inviting applications to become a certified blogger.

This year’s conference will be held in Vienna from the 10-13th of September 2011. We chose one of The EMBO Meeting’s main topics as a theme for our April contest:

Brain & Behaviour

So, we believe this topic is an increasing source of discoveries and inspirational discussions. Thus, we warmly invite you all to come along and tell us about your favorite model system or recent study!

*How to Enter*

There are several ways to enter your posts and posts can be new, old or recycled. We have introduced a very simple system on the blog contest site itself. This simple form takes seconds to fill in and just requires you send the URL at which the blog post was originally posted. You can send multiple links very quickly using this method. If it is a brand new post, feel free to set up a blog at Science 3.0 here (again this takes seconds and we can help you get it looking good, etc).
Alternatively you can send the link via twitter to @science3point0 or email the link or the html code of the blogpost to us here. We will endeavour to have your posts up on the site within 24 hours of receiving the links. In sending us the links you are authorising Science 3.0 to re-publish the post on the blog contest site.

*Prizes*

The prize for this month’s contest is provided by the EMBO Meeting fellows. It includes a whole lotta awesome goodies: an EMBO T-shirt, a USB pen, a nice and everywhere-to-use notebook, post-its, pen and… a chocolate bunny! It is Easter in April, right?

For all the people who would like to comment on a post, we would recommend they do! A Science 3.0 T-shirt is impatiently waiting for the most thoughtful comment.

So, get ready to blog!

A lot of time and money is being wasted by groups around the world duplicating research that has already been carried out. FigShare allows you to share all of your data, negative results and unpublished figures. In doing this, other researchers will not duplicate the work, but instead may publish with your previously wasted figures, or offer collaboration opportunities and feedback on preprint figures.

We want all researchers to:

Upload all of your negative data.

Upload all of your preliminary data.

….Upload all of your data!

Data can currently be uploaded as a figure or as a dataset. The figures can be linked to datasets and vice-versa. Figures can include images, graphs, photographs and many other formats.

There is no need to register (You still can of course!). You can log in with any of the following social media accounts:

FigShare is a permanent database of your research. To further ensure this, FigShare is supported by ‘Systems Institute‘. Systems Institute is a not for profit which is providing ongoing support for the hosting of FigShare as it expands. This also allows FigShare to make backups of all of your data each and every day.

FigShare is being developed with the great work done by the ‘Open Knowledge Foundation’ in mind. Ongoing converstaions with their data store facility CKAN mean that we are all pulling in the same direction, and all datastored witin FigShare will be available as a ‘Science Dataset’ for CKAN.

The beta release of FigShare is a fully functional data sharing platform. We will continue to develop the features of the site to bring you even more tools to help get your data to a global audience. If you have any suggestions or feature requests please get in touch.
In terms of scientific publishing I told him I thought it was almost there. You can read more of his thoughts on the potential for this in his post ‘Discussing WordPress for Scientists’. In the past week there has been lots of discussion about this on the ‘WordPress for Scientists’ google group.

Martin has been acting on his ideas and has so far come up with 4 great plugins:

ePub Export
ePub Export automatically creates an ePub file of every published or updated post or page.

 Link to Link
This plugin permits you to easily create a link using an item from the WordPress Links Manager.

 BibTeX Importer
Import links in the BibTeX reference format, either from a file or URL.

Contact Info Options
Add additional contact info fields to the user profile page and/or disable the instant messager fields.

If you fancy having a play around with these and many other wordpress plugins for scientists, Martin has a WordPress multisite set up to test out your ideas.

Another very interested party is knowledgeblog.org, who are looking at word press as an existing solution to the problem that ‘Scientific and academic publishing is a painful process for authors, reviewers and readers alike.’

The solution is already available; we just need to use it in a different way. Blogs and blog technology has been designed to allow people to discuss, share and disseminate their opinion in a simple and light-weight way. Adding a little formality to this, and we have a journal.

I asked Phil Lord of the knowledgeblog (a JISC grant funded project) what he though was missing still. I was a bit shocked (as I thought we were nearly there), but also encouraged by his foresight into the potential

His list looks like this:

– CiTO and general semantics in publications.
– content
– executable figures, with the code behind them.
Preferable with the figures themselves generating independently from
the authors.
– embeddable content (google maps and the like).
– accessible versions of content
– syntax highlighted, and linked code.
– links to version repos.
– inclusion in pubmed!
– author tooling (my own feeling is that wordpress is
okay for publishing, not good for authoring).
– “transclusion” plugin — journals just become channels, authors
publish on their own website.
– more content
– slide-show, and video.
– a marketplace, so people can easily buy authoring services
(type-settings, proof reading, English correction)
– semantic structuring of articles.
– still more content

Now this is way beyond my original vision. Yet at the same time, it’s achievable. Now, this would be a powerful tool for researchers.

These developments can also have implications in the field of open notebook publishing.

A great example of which is Carl Boettiger’s labbook, where he has a few scripts running to pull in figure images from flickr etc. You can read more about recent developments to his notebook in his latest blog post ‘Citation tools & Future of Publishing’.

There is a lot of scope with the potential for using wordpress in scholarly publishing. For me, its just a case of joining the links. Hopefully the organisation behind this effort will remain ordered and everything will remain simple for general scientific researchers, with no experience of wordpress.

As Phil Lord put it, we need:

something that is capable of replicating and improving on all or any aspect of the current publishing process.

In my opinion, I still believe we are almost there. The google group is filling up and the converstion is flowing. This could be the start of something brilliant. What I want to know is what the researchers think of this? As a basic scientist who only has a vague knowledge of wordpress, blogging and online annotation of your work, what would YOU need? My main concern is to make this easily available to everyone and for this it needs to be simple. So that is where my focus is going to lie, making all of the great tools on offer available and presented to users in a way which anyone can understand. Come and help us do this!

For a long time, I have been trying to allow users to add any personal feed as well as the youtube, twitter, flickr and facebook syncing that is currently available.

Well now you can! Promted by discussion on friendfeed about whether Science 3.0 offers a good alternative for the scientists out there who want to communicate (http://ff.im/xlMqH) with their peers and interested parties.

To do this just click on your name under your avatar in the sidebar. Click on setttings and you will see all of the options to sync including the new ‘external blogs’ tab.

The site wasnt set up as a friendfeed replacement but it does have better group functionality, with wikis for each group as well as document uploading and a whole load more online science tools to help make collaboration a lot easier. And most importantly, you can have an idea and act upon that idea, like Daniel Mietchen has with COASpedia, or like Steve Koch is doing with his teaching wiki. As for the CSS styling etc, we always need to leave some things left for development, or it would get boring They are on the way.

Please add your blog if you blog about online science, and please take the time to comment and develop new ideas. Much more in the pipeline, feedback is always welcomed.

NOTE:

I have previously said to please only add feeds if they ‘contain scientific content’ and some people thought this was a bit too specific. The idea of the site is to develop ideas for online science, therefore all chat is welcome between groups of people. I just think it is appropriate to stay within the sites wide ranging areas: science, data, blogging, open access, open data, GLAM, altmetrics, and a million more, including banter

If you think this is wrong to put limits on things, just let me know and we can discuss options.

Congratulations to all our entrants for their posts, the standard was very high and I’m sure their readership and traffic at their personal blogs increased just by participating. There were 15 posts to chose from this month so the competition is getting stronger! Each judge had a favourite and it took much deliberation to decide on a winner. You can see all of the posts from all of the competitions, including the winners, here.

And the winner of the January ‘SEX’ themed contest is….

Psycasm will be contacted shortly to organise delivery of his prize which was very generously provided by Mendeley. Psycasm also becomes a member of an elite group of science bloggers who have the permission to use the ‘S3.0 Blog contest Winner’ badge on their blog. The contest was judged by blog contest organisers @steelgraham and @malicia and an important factor in the desicion was feedback from the blogging community.

So to February, and the launch of the new contest that will run for 3 weeks as of today. I am happy to announce that the theme of this months competition will be:

Chemistry:Medicine

Chemistry is such a broad subject, that we have narrowed it down to just medicine themed posts – Posts can be new or recycled. The contest will end at midnight on the 21st Febuary 2011

Prizes.

We have introduced a very simple system on the blog contest site itself. This simple form takes seconds to fill in and just requires you send the URL at which the blog post was originally posted. You can send multiple links very quickly using this method. If it is a brand new post, feel free to set up a blog at Science 3.0 here (again this takes seconds and we can help you get it looking good etc).

If you would like to sponsor the blog contest, please feel free to contact us with any questions via E-mail here.
